Data Processing Engineer – Copernicus Missions (CIMR/CRISTAL- MicroCarb)
Description

WGS  is seeking experienced Data Processing Engineers to join our team delivering engineering services to our customer EUMETSAT in support of the Copernicus missions CIMR, CRISTAL, and MicroCarb.
The service focuses on the Payload Data Processing (PDP) sub-systems, contributing to system development, integration, validation, and maintenance activities. The service will be provided hybrid and travel is occasionally required.

Responsibilities

1. CIMR / CRISTAL – Development Phase
Darmstadt (hybrid, at least 20 % on-site)
You will support the definition, development, and validation of the Payload Data Processing systems for CIMR and CRISTAL.

Main tasks include:

  • Supporting requirements baseline definition and documentation.
  • Participating in system and software integration, verification and validation activities.
  • Preparing and executing test specifications and procedures.
  • Supporting anomaly investigations, risk assessment, and technical reviews.
  • Contributing to CI/CD setup for processor software delivery and testing.

2. MicroCarb – Operations Phase
Darmstadt (hybrid, at least 50 % on-site)
You will contribute to the maintenance and operational support of the MicroCarb Payload Data Processing (PDP) chain.

Main tasks include:

  • Investigation and resolution of anomalies and software issues.
  • Supporting installation, testing, and performance verification of software updates.
  • Contributing to the configuration and validation of the PDP and associated tools.
  • Supporting engineering and data-processing improvements and documentation activities.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Physics, Remote Sensing or a related technical field.
  • Fluent in English (spoken & written).
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work autonomously in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in data-processing system engineering, preferably within operational Earth Observation or scientific environments.
  • Willingness to travel within Europe when required.

Technical Expertise

  • Proven experience in data-processing systems engineering and operational EO data handling.
  • Strong background in software integration, testing, validation and verification (VCDs, IV&V plans, test procedures).
  • Practical experience with Linux environments and C/C++ software development.
  • Scripting and high-level languages: bash, shell, Python, Perl, Java.
  • Knowledge of software packaging/building (make, CMake, RPM) and version control (git, GitLab, SVN).
  • Familiarity with database systems and application programming.
  • Competence in automated testing, unit test suites, and CI/CD workflows.
  • Experience in data analytics for satellite EO products.

Process & Quality

  • Experience with requirements management (DOORS) and change/configuration management processes.
  • Excellent technical documentation and writing skills.
  • Familiarity with formal reviews (Requirement, Design, and Test Readiness Reviews).
