We are looking for an experienced Mission Control and Operations System Engineer to support EUMETSAT's Copernicus Mission Development (CMD) Division .The service is performed primarily on-site at EUMETSAT headquarters in Darmstadt.
The Candidate will support engineering, integration, verification and validation (IV&V) activities for the Mission Control and Operations Sub-Segment (MCOS) of the next-generation Copernicus Earth Observation missions — CO2M, CRISTAL/CIMR and Sentinel-3 Next Generation Optical (S3-NGO) — throughout their development and IV&V lifecycle, up to and including System Commissioning.
Specific responsibilities include:
- Contributing to requirements engineering for MCOS at System, Ground Segment and GS Element level, including definition, derivation, traceability and formalisation of requirement baselines (e.g. via DOORS).
- Supporting system and interface design activities for MCOS components; Mission Control Subsystem (MCS), Flight Dynamics Subsystem (FDS), Mission Planning Subsystem (MPS), Operations Preparation Tools (OPSPREP) and Satellite Simulator (SIMSAT) ,including design documentation, ICDs and trade-off studies.
- Preparing test specifications, test procedures and test reports, and contributing to the planning and execution of integration, verification and validation (IV&V) campaigns at System, Ground Segment and GS Element level.
- Supporting software and hardware configuration deployment, patch/release verification, and anomaly processing (ARBs/CRBs participation).
- Preparing and maintaining Verification Control Documents (VCDs) and supporting Verification Control Boards (VCBs), Test Readiness Reviews (TRRs) and Test Review Boards (TRBs).
- Contributing to major project reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, IVVR, ORR, Commissioning Review) by reviewing documentation, raising RIDs, and following up resulting actions.
- Supporting rehearsals, launch preparation, satellite commissioning and system commissioning activities.
- Contributing to Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) activities for MCOS, where applicable.
- Interfacing with the Mission Operations Team to consolidate operational concepts for Mission Control Applications, and following the development of applications delivered by internal and external contractors.
- Supporting the evolution and documentation of interfaces between MCOS and other Ground Segment elements (MDPS, MMEs, ESA FOS/MDAS).
Mandatory Requirements
- Excellent spoken and written English, with ability to prepare clear, accurate and consistent technical documentation.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Mission Control Engineering / Spacecraft Monitoring & Control applications (requirements, architectural design and/or implementation), combined with at least 3 years of demonstrated experience in Systems Engineering and IV&V, including the IV&V of Satellite Mission Control Systems, at System and/or Ground Segment level for Earth Observation missions, including generation of test specifications, test procedures and test reports.
- Knowledge and working experience of space-related engineering standards and lifecycles (ECSS, CCSDS) concerning space-to-ground interfaces applicable to Satellite Mission Control Systems (e.g. ECSS Packet Utilisation Standard – PUS, CCSDS Space Packet Protocol – SPP, CCSDS Space Link Extension – SLE).
- Experience in requirements engineering and requirements traceability, using dedicated tools (e.g. IBM DOORS or equivalent).
- Experience supporting engineering reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR or equivalent) and formal testing (FAT/OSAT), including preparation of test procedures, TRRs/TRBs.
- Experience in preparation and maintenance of Verification Control Documents (VCDs) and formal verification control processes, including Verification Control Boards (VCBs).
- Experience in interface management and definition, including preparation and management of Interface Control Documents (ICDs).
- Demonstrated experience with Linux operating systems.
- University degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
Nice to have
- Experience customising Spacecraft Monitoring & Control applications based on the MICONYS® software suite (ESA/ESOC), particularly in telemetry, commanding and archive components.
- Knowledge of the Mission Control System's interfaces with Mission Planning Systems and Flight Dynamics Systems, and of spacecraft/ground segment operations.
- Experience with test tools for Spacecraft Monitoring & Control Systems (e.g. satellite simulators such as SIMSAT).
- Use of modelling and design languages for System Engineering (e.g. SysML) and supporting tools (e.g. Enterprise Architect).
- Experience with automated testing (e.g. Jenkins, Selenium, Robot Framework), CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Docker), and test management tools such as Jira Xray (test planning, execution and reporting).
- Knowledge of CCSDS File Delivery Protocol (CFDP) and the wider CCSDS standards stack.
- Knowledge of mission product Quality Control, Calibration and Validation.
- Knowledge of IT/ground segment technologies: relational databases, virtualisation, containerisation, networking, SW deployment tools.
- Experience supporting Copernicus, Sentinel
