AI/ML & IVV Engineer for EO Satellite Imagery
Description
WGS is looking for an experienced AI/ML Development & IVV Engineer to support EUMETSAT.
The role focuses on the development and validation of automated landmark detection for satellite imagery, combining Earth Observation and verification & validation expertise. The position is off-site.
Responsibilities
- Review and evaluate AI/ML and image-processing approaches for automated landmark and feature detection in satellite imagery.
- Design, develop and maintain a modular Python-based solution for satellite image analysis and geometric quality assessment.
- Develop and apply AI/ML models to representative GEO and LEO Earth Observation data.
- Define and perform verification and validation activities, including data analysis, accuracy assessment and comparison with existing methods.
- Prepare and analyse validation datasets and support the testing and evaluation of the developed solution.
- Maintain the software using Git-based configuration management and ensure a well-structured, documented and maintainable solution.
- Contribute to technical documentation, reports, reviews and presentations throughout the project.
Qualifications
The Candidate shall have the following attributes and skills:
Mandatory Requirements
- University degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Remote Sensing, Geodesy, Physics or a related field.
- At least 3 years of professional experience in AI/ML, Earth Observation, remote sensing, image processing, software engineering, verification & validation or a related technical field.
- Strong hands-on experience with Python 3 for scientific or engineering applications.
- Professional experience with machine learning/deep learning and computer vision, preferably involving feature detection, image analysis or object localisation.
- Experience working with Earth Observation or satellite imagery, preferably multispectral data.
- Knowledge of Image Navigation and Registration (INR) and Geometric Quality Assessment (GQA) concepts for satellite imagery.
- Experience with verification and validation activities and statistical analysis of spatial or positional data.
- Familiarity with NetCDF and the CF metadata convention.
- Experience with Git-based configuration management, preferably GitLab.
- Ability to prepare clear and structured technical/scientific documentation and reports.
- Good written and spoken English.
- Ability to work effectively in an international and multidisciplinary team.
- Awareness of the requirements and potential risks associated with the use of AI/ML and generative AI tools in contractual and intellectual-property-sensitive environments.
Nice to have
- Experience with EUMETSAT, ESA or Copernicus missions, particularly MTG/FCI, EPS-SG/MetImage, AVHRR or Sentinel missions.
- Experience with classical feature detection or tracking methods used for geometric quality assessment.
- Experience with coastline- or landmark-based geometric validation and knowledge of related limitations such as cloud contamination and spectral or diurnal effects.
- Experience with IBM DOORS, Jira/Xray or other requirements and test-management tools.
- Experience with GitLab CI/CD, Jenkins, Docker or similar development and deployment technologies.
- Familiarity with SysML/MBSE, Ground Segment IV&V or satellite data-processing systems.
- Knowledge of CCSDS data formats and Earth Observation data standards.
- Familiarity with ECSS standards and/or EUMETSAT technical documentation practices.
- Experience with machine-learning model evaluation and performance monitoring.
- Experience contributing to ESA/EUMETSAT studies or tender proposals.
- Knowledge of the EU AI Act and AI governance or compliance requirements.
