We are looking for experienced Data Processing Engineers to support the maintenance, operations, and evolution of EUMETSAT's Payload Data Processing (PDP) systems for the Copernicus Sentinel-3 and CO2M missions. The service covers anomaly correction, software evolutions, and release processes within the Satellite System Ground Segments (SGS) division, including coordination across Copernicus mission ground segments.
The service is performed primarily on-site at EUMETSAT headquarters in Darmstadt, with a minimum on-site presence of 50% of working time.
- Anomaly processing: Investigation, identification and fixing of application software and configuration problems; implementation of new software requirements; participation in Anomaly Review Boards (ARBs), Software Review Boards (SRBs) and Change Review Boards (CRBs).
- Software & hardware deployment: Contribute to Software/Hardware Engineering Tasks (SWETs/HWETs) for new patches and releases; build, install and verify software on development and reference chains for operational release; install hardware as required.
- System engineering: Investigation and improvement of PDP sub-systems and facility components; contribution to SWETs/ECPs/Technical Notes; assessment, impact analysis and preparation of PDP and processor evolutions.
- Test automation: Set up and maintain a Test Suite within the Automated Test Environment (ATE) for individual processors and end-to-end data processing chains.
- Additional engineering support: Data processing software engineering tasks as required; engineering contribution to other EUMETSAT teams.
- Documentation: Maintenance of system models in Enterprise Architect and requirements in DOORS; update of technical baseline documents (ADD, ICD, STB); maintenance of working practices and procedures in Confluence.
- Knowledge sharing & meetings: Cross-training of SGS personnel on data processing systems; participation in facility, sub-system and system-level reviews, technical and progress meetings, and coordination with partner organisations.
The candidate shall have the following attributes and skills:
- University degree (or equivalent) in a relevant technical discipline (engineering, computer science, or similar)
- Fluency in English (written and spoken)
- Proven experience with data processing (Level-0, Level-1 and Level-2) of meteorological and/or Earth observation products from satellite instruments
- Proven experience in integration, verification and validation (IV&V) of data processing systems, including generation of test plans, test specifications, procedures and test reports for end-to-end processing chains
- Proven experience in system engineering development and system design
- Knowledge of scripting languages and databases (e.g. Perl, Python, shell, PostgreSQL)
- Demonstrated experience with UNIX/Linux operating systems
- Practical knowledge of configuration control
- Knowledge of computer systems, network systems and IT security
- Ability to write accurate and consistent technical documentation
- High degree of working autonomy, problem-solving ability and analytical skills
- Experience working as part of a multicultural international team
Furthermore, it would be a distinct advantage for the candidate to have experience with some of the following:
- Knowledge of spacecraft and/or ground segment operations
- Knowledge of programming languages (C/C++, Java, IDL)
- Knowledge and/or experience of quality control, calibration and validation
- Experience in development and maintenance of operational procedures and/or configuration data
- Knowledge of ECSS standards
- Knowledge of DOORS requirements management tool
- Knowledge of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), SysML and Enterprise Architect
