Ground Stations Operations Engineer
Description
WGS is looking for experienced Ground Stations Operations Engineers to support for current and future GEO and LEO Earth Observation missions.
The service covers routine and non-routine operations, ground station monitoring and anomaly investigation, system upgrades and evolutions, as well as verification, validation and operations preparation for new missions.
The service is performed primarily on-site at EUMETSAT headquarters in Darmstadt.
Responsibilities
The Candidate will support ground station operations engineering activities, including:
- Supporting routine, non-routine and contingency operations of complex ground station systems for GEO and LEO missions.
- Monitoring ground station performance, investigating and resolving anomalies, and supporting operational improvements.
- Supporting ground station upgrades and evolutions, including verification, validation, commissioning and operations preparation for new missions.
- Supporting the integration and validation of interfaces between ground stations and ground segment systems, including simulators.
- Configuring and operating baseband, monitoring and control systems and supporting SLE services.
- Preparing and maintaining technical and operational documentation, procedures and working practices.
- Participating in technical reviews, anomaly investigations and coordination activities
- Providing technical support and training to operational personnel when required.
- Participating in standby, call-out, weekend, holiday, late-night or shift work as required by the service.
Qualifications
The candidate shall have the following attributes and skills:
Mandatory Requirements
- University degree (or equivalent) in an engineering or scientific discipline relevant to the role, such as telecommunications, electronics, radio frequency, aerospace or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years of professional engineering experience in the operation of complex ground station systems, including TT&C and Mission Data Acquisition, supporting multiple GEO and/or LEO spacecraft, preferably Earth Observation missions.
- Experience in verification and validation (V&V) of ground station systems.
- Good experience with tools such as JIRA, SharePoint and Dataminer.
- Experience with major upgrades or evolutions of operational ground stations.
- Experience in the definition, verification and validation of interfaces between ground stations and ground segment systems, including simulators.
- Proven experience in first-line diagnosis and resolution of hardware and software anomalies in ground station systems.
- Practical experience in baseband system configuration and operation.
- Experience in the preparation of technical and operational documentation, including requirements, design descriptions, interface specifications, test specifications and operational procedures.
- Experience with document management and configuration control in an engineering or operational environment.
- Experience in the definition and/or optimisation of operational user interfaces, such as HMI screens, operator views or operational reports.
- Working knowledge of relevant technical and operational standards, particularly ECSS and CCSDS.
- Strong analytical, communication, presentation and technical writing skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary and international teams.
- Ability to work systematically under pressure, manage multiple activities and perform effectively in time-critical operational situations.
- Full proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Willingness to participate in standby, call-out, weekend, holiday, late-night or shift work when required.
- For Senior/Expert-level candidates with Service Level Manager responsibilities: minimum 2 years of proven experience leading and managing technical service teams, including responsibility for service performance, planning, resource allocation and service delivery.
Nice to have
- Experience with EUMETSAT missions, such as MSG, MTG, EPS, EPS-SG, Sentinel-3 or Sentinel-6, or comparable Earth Observation ground segments.
- Experience supporting operations preparation, commissioning and Operational Scenario Validation (OSV) for new satellite missions.
- Experience with Copernicus, Sentinel or other European Earth Observation programmes.
- Experience with technical training and preparation of training materials.
- Experience in the configuration and/or operation of Space Link Extension (SLE) services.
- Experience with operational KPI and statistics reporting.
- Knowledge of French.
